What is Chikungunya ?

Chikungunya is name of virus which is the most prevalent in parts of Africa. Term Chikungunya is swahiti (African language) means that "which bends up."

How dose Chikungunya infects Human beings ?

The virus infects human beings. When infected mosquito’s bites humans. Mosquitoes are infected when they bite infected humans, monkeys, & the other wild animals.

Which mosquito is responsible for the spread ?

Aedes aegypti (also spreads Dengue) is responsible for the spread of disease. Unlike other mosquito is aggressive day time bites. It breeds in standing water i.e. flowerpots, buckets, barrels, pet dishes, coolertanks etc.

What kind of illness does it causes?

After 2 – 12 days of mosquito's bite Usually it causes high grade fewer headache pain in swellings over joints nausea vomiting myalgia & rashes. Joints pains & fatigue may last for week to months. In some cases the infection may remain asymptomatic clinical features are more serve in aged patients or patients suffering from other co mosquitoes

Do we have a vaccine against Chikungunya virus ?

Till now no vaccine is available. Though efforts are on to develop vaccine. Although infection is virus once confess life long immunity.

What is the treatment ?

Treatment is largely symptomatic Paracetamol for fever; rest, Ibuprofen for pain can be given. Corticosteroid & Disprin should not be given. Infected persons should be prevented from mosquito bites because mosquitoes biting infected will get infected & will further spread the disease.

 

What preventive measures can be taken ?

As there is no vaccine or preventive drug available best is to avoid mosquito bites

  • Wear full sleeves shirts & pants

  • Use mosquito repellents

  • Use secure screens & on doors & windows

  • Don’t allow mosquitoes to breeds

  • Clean water cooler tanks, flowerpots, pet dishes, buckets & other vessels.

  • Change water frequently from cooler tanks & other vessels
